Does Dimraeth have romance?

Dimraeth’s store page promises that deeper relationships unlock new conversations, personal quests and potential romances. A forum moderator says the romance systems are in the Early Access build but not every character can be romanced. Mudtek has not said which characters can, or what a romance leads to. The documented, practical side of relationships is recruiting allies to your Sanctum.

What the store page says

Deeper relationships unlock new conversations, personal quests, and potential romances.

Mudtek. From the Dimraeth Steam store page

The store’s short description also invites you to forge relationships. Note the word potential: the store does not list romance options, and it describes the game as a whole, not only the Early Access build.

What has been said about it, in order

Early devlog
Romance as a core part of the design

Game Director Phillip, introducing Earlwood Village: you will forge friendships and pursue romance with those you meet, each bond unfolding through unique questlines and personal moments.

An early open playtest
Not there yet

The Game Director’s notes for that playtest: Right now there are no NPC romance questlines or payoffs. The current content introduces many of the characters, but there isn’t enough content yet to reach conclusions or payoffs. That described the playtest build, not Early Access.

Shortly before launch
Relationships progress per player in co-op

A developer, asked about co-op: Even the relationship system allows you and your friends to both progress that independently.

Around launch
A moderator’s answer

In the forum thread titled Romances?, Wizardmanguy, a forum moderator and not a developer: There ARE romance systems in the game, not every character is romancable, but the systems are there and will be expanded upon!

What players see in the Early Access build

Two first-hand accounts, both from people playing it, neither from Mudtek:

SwoleBenji

A heart on dialogue choices

you’ll have the heart icon. That means that you hit on the character. SwoleBenji never pursued it: I don’t know if they’re datable.

A Steam forum player

Thin for now

In a long thread about the dialogue, one player called it the intended Romance system which is currently rather barebones.

So the practical answer: look for heart-marked dialogue options with characters you meet. Which characters respond, and whether a romance ends in a quest or scene, is not documented. The wider question of how the dialogue is written is on Dimraeth AI dialogue questions.

Personas: how your character talks

Every conversation runs through the Persona you pick at character creation. Game Director Phillip’s character creation blog, written before Early Access, lists four, and a forum moderator names the Scholar and the Joker when answering players on the launch build:

the Hero leans toward principled, sacrificial answers, the Scholar toward probing questions and analysis, the Joker toward irreverence, the Stoic toward blunt clarity.

Phillip, Game Director. From the blog Steam announcement: Character Creation in Dimraeth

The blog says a Persona does not lock you in: Choosing a Persona does not lock you into a single style of dialogue forever. Instead, it increases the frequency of certain types of responses. But the pick itself is permanent for that character in Early Access. A forum moderator: once you confirm a character’s appearance/name/personality there is no way to change it. Choose it with your race and class; those choices are on all Dimraeth archetypes.

Allies: the part with documented effects

Relationships have a concrete payoff in your base. Characters you help can move into the Sanctum, and investing in their facilities changes what they offer:

Invest materials in your allies’ facilities to expand shop inventories, add new crafting services, and open more farming plots.

Romance and relationships in co-op

The store says recruited allies stay with the world, not your character, while the developer quoted above says each player’s relationship progress is their own. Mudtek has not explained what happens when two players pursue the same character. How worlds and characters split progress is on Dimraeth co-op.
