Dimraeth planks: Pinewood first, Heart Oak later

You cannot craft your first Pinewood Planks: loot them from chests, corpses and hollow logs in the Farmland north of Earlwood Village, and build the workbench as soon as you have them. From then on, make Pinewood Planks at the workbench from pinewood. Heart Oak comes later; players find it in the northern woods after the first boss.

Players call the later wood both heart oak and heartwood; it may be one item. The build menu lists a Heart Oak Mill and a Pinewood Mill under Production.

Your first two Pinewood Planks, before the workbench

The workbench blueprint comes from the Learning to Build quest (the order is on the Dimraeth walkthrough), but you cannot craft its planks yet. Until then the only way to get Pinewood Planks is to loot them at random from dead bodies, chests and the little holes in logs. If you loot as you go, you should have two in your stash by the time the workbench quest comes up.

Teleport to Earlwood and head into the Farmland
Pick up the quest board in Earlwood, then go to the farmlands to look for planks and nails. The regions are laid out on the Dimraeth map.
Open every chest and search every corpse
In the Farmland just north of Earlwood Village, planks drop most often from chests and corpses. Tree trunks are worth checking too.
Still short? Try the stump chests further north
If the Farmland is unlucky for you, try the stump chests in the forest area north of it. Some players only got their last plank after grabbing the main quest in town and going through the woods.
In co-op, check the loot setting
A multiplayer lobby without personal loot can leave you a plank short. If planks never seem to drop in your lobby, check how loot is split; the personal loot toggle, and a report that it does not work, are on Dimraeth co-op.
Keep your bags light while you look
Use the chest on the right side of the guild hall until you can build your own. Break down gear at the blacksmith and sell what you do not need right now. Carry weight is covered on Dimraeth inventory and encumbrance.

After the workbench: make Pinewood Planks yourself

Place the workbench in your Dimraeth Sanctum and the looting stops mattering: craft nails from stone and planks from pinewood, and you never depend on drops again.

To gather pinewood

Tools first

You need an axe for pinewood trees and a pickaxe for stone deposits, plus gloves for higher-grade plants. The workbench can make a Stone Woodcutting Axe, a Stone Pickaxe and Flax Gloves, but Rahaner, the Earlwood trainer, should give you all three for free.

What to spend them on

Chests next

Place a storage chest from the Sanctum build menu; it only needs stone nails and some planks. Stone Nails are a workbench recipe too. The other recipes are on Dimraeth crafting.

Heart Oak planks: the northern woods

Players find heart oak in the northern woods, after the first boss. You are in the right area when the wolves start shooting back. The ranged enemies that come with wolf packs are on Dimraeth enemies, and the boss order is on Dimraeth bosses.

What you need it for:

Copper tools.
A facility center, which a Sanctum quest asks for early; the heart oak for it is in the next area. Higher-tier materials such as copper and heartwood come as you go through the second zone.
Building up your town.

If you reach the facility center step before the northern woods, skip it and carry on with the main quest; it is waiting on a material from further along the route in the Dimraeth beginner guide.

Four ways to lose planks

Materials left inside the workbench may not countResources stored in the workbench did not count toward placing an alchemy table. Take crafted planks out into your inventory before you build.

Taking them out can delete themSome players had planks deleted when taking them out of the workbench and had to craft them again. Other workarounds are on Dimraeth bugs and fixes.

Quitting mid-craft loses your materialsYou cannot cancel a craft in progress, and players report the materials disappear if you exit to the main menu or quit while it runs. Queue only as many planks as you need, and let the craft finish before you quit.

One plank short of a workbench? Try a vendorOne player who could not find a last plank, and so could not build the workbench to make more, got out by buying from a vendor. Keep some gold back until the workbench is down.

The hunt can take hours: one player could not build a workbench or chests for the first 3 hours. Go straight to the Farmland chests after Earlwood.
