Dimraeth controls and controller settings

Dimraeth plays with WASD and mouse, with a mouse-movement scheme, or with a controller. In mouse movement you move with the right mouse button, and a developer says that button cannot be rebound. Sprint and dash sit on the same key. On controller, attacks aim at the enemy the game auto-targets unless you switch on the setting to attack in the direction you face.

The three schemes side by side

SchemeMoveBasic attackWhat to know
WASD keyboardWASDLeft clickAttacks go toward the mouse cursor, so moving attack to a key does not free you from the mouse.
Mouse movementRight click, or hold right clickLeft clickThe move button is not rebindable; a developer floated a left/right toggle.
ControllerStickX on Xbox layout, Square on PlayStationAuto-targets by default; a setting makes attacks follow your facing instead.

On every scheme the basic attack does a second job. A developer spelled it out when a player could not keep their middle bar up:

CodexMaster Developer, replying on the Steam forum

Hitting enemies with basic attacks, (left click on WASD Keyboard controls or X/Square on controller) is what regens your concentration.

Thread: Steam discussion: how do you regain stamina in combat?

So a build that only presses spells runs dry. How concentration and stamina costs shape a character is on Dimraeth builds.

Mouse movement: move with right click

Players switching to mouse movement expect left click to walk, as in Diablo. It does not. When one asked why left click did nothing, the answer came from two developers:

Mudtek Developer, replying on the Steam forum

right click - you can hold right click as well

Thread: Steam discussion: Mouse Movement does not work
Viakaros Developer, replying on the Steam forum

Unfortunately it is not rebindable, but I can probably add a quick boolean for mouse settings where you can toggle between right/left click.

Thread: Steam discussion: Mouse Movement does not work

That toggle was an idea in a reply, not an announced setting. Until it exists, the scheme is right-click to move. A player who asked about one-handed play found the forum moderator pointing to There is a mouse-movement control scheme, and another player gave the menu path as Options-control-control type set to mouse.

Sprint and dash share one key

One button does both. A thread asking for separate binds opens with I KEEP dashing when im just trying to sprint, or sprinting when im trying to dash. Not every player wants the same fix. A reply argued against making the dash key a sprint key, because a combined button can only fire the dash when you let go:

Dashes are the most time sensitive activities in the game, they need to happen immediately as the button is pressed.

A player. Posted in Steam discussion: Dash and sprint should have the option for two different keybinds.

No developer has replied in that thread. What you can change today is how much you need to hold sprint at all. In jonplaysgames’ Early Access recording, the new-game setup they read aloud includes Select a movement type. Normal sprint. Auto sprint while exploring. SwoleBenji recommends the automatic option in their starter guide:

one thing that you do want to turn on, and the game should prompt you later on, but you might as well just turn it on now, is auto sprint outside of combat.

Rebinding keys

Works

Most actions rebind

A keyboard-only player opened their post with Great that you can re-key things. On Steam Deck, a player wrote you can rebind keys and it got an option to allow the steam decks backbottoms.

Does not

Right-click move, and a few prompts

Mouse-movement walking stays on right click. Rebound consumables have a display bug, reported by a player:

If you remap the button for using consumable items using the keyboard, the UI doesn’t update

A player. Posted in Steam discussion: A minor UI bug

The same player later found that after restarting the game, the UI buttons in the bottom left for the hotbar do update, though the ones in the inventory don’t. So restart after rebinding and trust the hotbar over the inventory screen.

Two limits players have raised with no reply yet. Keyboard-only play is awkward, because you can remap attack to a keyboard key, but that’s impractical because your mouse cursor will be somewhere on the screen and your hero will always strike in that direction. And the mouse wheel cannot hold abilities; one request reads Can we have Mouswheel up and down for keybinds?

Controller: aim where you face

The official FAQ lists controller play on PC, Steam Deck and handheld PCs. One controller complaint on the forum is attacks that stick to one direction during a combo, where the mouse lets you swing anywhere. The developer pointed to a setting:

Viakaros Developer, replying on the Steam forum

There is an option in settings if you want to attack in the direction you are facing rather than the direction of the monster it auto-targeted.

Thread: Steam discussion: controller melee input is overly stiff and feels off. its no were as fluent as the mouse is

The developer did not give the option’s exact label or which settings tab holds it, so look for that wording. The player who raised it thought it was already off and planned to check; the thread ends there. Building in the Sanctum on controller has its own snag: selecting a placed building to salvage it. A player’s answer was The second joystick will do the trick, but it is very clunky and depends on where you stand. What you can build there is on the Dimraeth Sanctum page.

Steam Deck and handhelds: stuck on the wrong input

A thread titled about playing docked on Steam Deck, where the game will not switch to mouse and keyboard, filled with ROG Ally owners hitting the reverse: the game kept flipping to keyboard and mouse. I tried both xbox and desktop mode on the ROG ally and it just keeps switching back to M&K when I would I would close the settings.

Viakaros Developer, replying on the Steam forum

Something about the ROG must be registering to the game as keyboard/mouse input. I’ll have to familiarize myself with their API.

Thread: Steam discussion: Playing Docked on Steam Deck and it won't switch to Mouse and Keyboard

The developer reply is about the ROG Ally, not the Deck. The workaround that thread did produce came from an Ally player: Hmm suddenly works now that I turned on Steam input! The original docked Deck problem has no developer answer. Neither does the PC version of it, where a player wrote I can’t change the controls to WASD because the game automatically switches back to the gamepad layout. A separate Deck owner reported that the game doesn’t respond to any of the controller inputs, even if i use an external controller but does respond to touchscreen inputs, also unanswered. Deck performance and what the developers have said about it are on Dimraeth on Steam Deck, and input bugs with workarounds are collected on Dimraeth bugs and fixes.
